Boat Restoration - Make Your Own Gudgeons & Pintles, Cleats, & Oarlocks
Sunday July 06th 2008, 10:41 pm

Old boat restoration is not unlike vintage car or motorcycle
restoration, i.e. you’ll find many parts that are unsalvagable
and will need to be replaced or reconditioned at some stage during the restoration.

While it might be argued that most people who choose to restore old boats have access to considerable funds to pay for the labour & to purchase many of the expensive metal parts and materials that need replacing during the restoration
process.

But for every well-heeled re-builder there would be another five
people whose passion and love for old boats drives their desire
to take on extensive restoration with little funds but using
ingenuity, and many old crafts and skills, which sadly are
quickly diminishing from this world, except for the small band
of people who are determined to keep them alive.

One would think that restoring old boats is all about working
with timber and wood working tools, and to large degree it is.
But what about all of the metal components used in boat or
marine building, there are many hundreds of parts made from
bronze, brass, stainless, aluminium…the list goes on.

For the budget conscious boat builder/restorer the replacement
cost of these special metal parts can be quite expensive to say the
least, to purchase many of these parts in one lot would certainly put a strain on the re-building budget.

Did you know that there are methods and techniques that you can
use to acquire many of these expensive parts for a mere fraction
of their retail cost. If you are a DIY boat builder or restorer, then you are a practical person and you enjoy the personal reward when you build and create things your self.

If you spent a small amount of time to learn the basic techniques
of how to cast metal you would soon realize and understand the real value of being able to create your own special parts such as cleats & chocks which you could easily make from bronze.
There are so many small parts that corrode and decay over the
years from exposure to salt water and the atmosphere.
Metal decay or oxidation is just a natural thing.

Some of the items that you could make as a boat re-builder are: gudgeons & pintles both large and small, what about the deck
hardware like the bronze or brass oarlocks, herreshoft cleats, hook & eye straps, perhaps you need to replace some of the solid or open base cleats…. there are just so many things that can be reproduced by the practical boat builder.

And you of all people will understand that marine parts are expensive to buy, you could reduce the price considerably by casting and machining & finishing the castings and parts you need right in your own workshop you can do it just like many others have before you.

Perhaps you are beginning to wonder how the devil you will go about this metal work. the answer is to build your own mini foundry gear to melt and pour bronze, brass aluminium etc, you’ll use the old traditional method of green sand casting, you can also use the old parts as patterns.
The techniques and principles are not difficult to learn and you will enjoy the creative part of the work just as you enjoy the rebuilding of the hundreds of other parts, which will receive your dedicated attention as you bring your pride and joy back to the pristine condition your floating treasure once enjoyed.

Kobe Beats Shaq on MLK Day 2006
Friday June 13th 2008, 11:25 pm

There wasn’t much hype to this game considering that these two played only 3 weeks ago in Miami. But that didn’t stop this game from being just as entertaining as the last. 5 technical fouls, 3 disqualifications, and Shaq and Kobe combined for 20 in the 4th. It’s just too bad it didn’t have a more climactic ending.

Much like last year’s Lakers/Heat game in LA, the Lakers led practically the whole game. Lamar Odom finished just an assist shy of a triple-double and managed 19 points despite never really asserting himself. Devean George provided 17 off the bench as well as an intensity boost. And of course Kobe had 37. When Bryant actually shoots above .500 in a game, you know the other team is in trouble.

Miami had injury added to insult with ailments to both Jason Williams and Dwayne Wade. Williams didn’t return and Wade has serious troubles with mobility.

The game’s highlight obviously occurred in the short time that Andrew Bynum was in it. After getting posterized by a Shaq dunk, Bynum was able to turn away from O’Neal and slam the ball in his face. Bynum was so hyped that he inadvertently nudged Shaq, who wasn’t shy on responding with a powerful forearm to the chest. It was a double technical and neither players were ejected. However Shaq can expect a fine in the near future.

Miami began to make a run with both Wade and O’Neal out in the early stages of the 4th. Payton, Walker and Mourning (the only Heat players to play off the bench) all contributed heavily and helped cut the lead down. When Wade came in he gave the Heat a lift and hit several bank shots to trim the lead to 3. However he was wobbling the entire way and might sit out the next game.

But in the end it was too much Kobe. Hitting four tough shots he carried the Lakers on his back and prevented Shaq to get the better of him this time around. Wade finished with 34 and O’Neal ended with 18.

Thanks to the Spurs/Grizzlies game, the start of this one was delayed so we didn’t get to see Shaq and Kobe exchange heartfelt interactions. As sick as I was of these two meeting or not meeting at half court, this gesture was both appropriate and nice to see. Shaq said that Bill Russell told him to shake hands with Bryant; major kudos for Russell for both taking place in the Spurs/Grizz halftime and this.

All those great early games on Monday were a perfect tribute to MLK. It wasn’t necessary to play all the games in the afternoon instead of night but it showed that it was a special occasion. The Memphis/San Antonio halftime show was significant (where were all the fans? How could FedEx Forum be that empty?). If Kobe/Shaq is to be annually played, the NBA should consider putting it on MLK day. Seeing Kobe and Shaq extend an olive branch is fitting for the occasion, and this shouldn’t be the last time we see it.

Tips For Golf Swing - Make Your Game Better
Monday May 26th 2008, 12:36 am

There are some fundamental rules to the game of golf. Serious golfers often disagree on what the basics consist of, but if you are among the millions who desperately want to improve their golf swing, these basic tips will help you tremendously and save you a lot of frustration.

The three most important steps you should keep in mind are to keep your head perfectly still, relax your muscles, and keep your club head traveling in a straight line while making contact with the ball. The simple act of keeping your head still throughout your shot can improve your swing immediately. By keeping your club head in a straight line while making contact with the ball, you will avoid slicing and several other undesirable results.

Relaxing your muscles will aid you tremendously in keeping the proper balance. Balance is imperative to a good golf swing. Stand comfortably so you can reach the ball easily and remember that the muscles that propel the ball are the same muscles that twist the body and are the most powerful. No matter what stroke you are making or what club you are playing with, balance is the foundation to a good golf swing, and you must keep your muscles relaxed to achieve perfect balance. Balance really is the cure-all for many faults of golf. Think about keeping your head still and maintaining your balance at all times and you will have a foundation for an excellent golf game.

In the game of golf, no two people ever swing at the ball in the same way. Because of your individual body build, you develop your own individual set of muscles. A method of swinging a golf club used by one person who is of a different build and has developed a different set of muscles may not be of value to you. Golf will always be an individual sport. Find the method of playing that will produce results for you, and then go with it. When you are ready to play a game, and you are faced with a shot, make your decision on how you are going to do things. Do not be persuaded to change your methods every time you have a bad game.

Make sure you keep your eye on the ball and that any stance you take will allow you to see the ball from every point of the stroke. If your golf swing is off, go back to these fundamental rules and plan each shot in advance. Take your time and develop your own methods that work best for you, but keep in mind these basic principles and you will notice a definite improvement in your golf game.

Celades y Milito quieren jugar cuanto antes, HACEN HORAS EXT
