Exercise Equals Fun!
Getting America’s children to exercise has never been more difficult as the new boob-tube generation slouches in front of TVs, or sits for hours, mesmerized behind shoot-out video and computer games.
However, it is possible to foster a regular exercise pattern for children from an early age, with simple activities that are more “fun” than “exercise.”
America’s Pastimes
Back in the day, kids played hopscotch and tag and didn’t know that it qualified as exercise! Reviving America’s pastimes could be an easy way to promote physical fitness. Hopscotch improves balance and coordination, while the constant stop-go running in a healthy game of tag elevates the heart rate to more efficiently burn calories. Jumping rope is another American favorite that has fallen by the wayside. The regular interval in jumping rope pumps the heart steadily, and is an efficient form of aerobic exercise.
Biking
Biking is another excellent way to get a child to exercise. From first learning on a tricycle to the celebrated arrival of the two-wheeler, biking is something that can be viewed as an achievement, as well as an easy way to increase a child’s physical activity. Biking helps children develop coordination, balance, work the back muscle groups that aid good posture, and build up leg muscles. Another exercise that can be performed daily by a child is none other than the traditional walk with the dog. Jogging, or even walking at a brisk pace, with the dog, floods the body with endorphins and a slew of other health benefits related to exercise. Bring along a stick to throw to Fido, and the workout has becomes even more intense. What’s more: walking the dog everyday is a sure-fire way to maintain regular exercise, which is much more advantageous, in the long run, than intermittent exercising.
Yoga for Kids
Yoga has taken America by storm in recent years. From celebrity yogis like Madonna to stay-at-home moms, yoga has proven to be a way to tone and “center” the mind and body. Yoga is beginning to creep into the school gym programs, too. Just as many high schools throughout the nation have begun offering yoga as a gym option, many “yoga for kids” programs have sprung up as well. Yoga aims to tone the muscle groups, aid coordination, and improve flexibility through stretching. In addition, it has been said that a key principle in yoga, correct breathing, seems to alleviate stress in children.

Your beer belly will do just fine. Girls just love big beer bellies you justify to yourself. So who needs a flat tummy with those ugly six pack abs? You certainly don’t.
• You don’t need a fitness personal trainer because you believe in the precept of “no pain no gain.” So if you exercise using the wrong form and techniques resulting in painful or even worse, permanent injuries, well, that is pain isn’t it? So therefore with pain, there will be gains. Hmmm, such profound reasoning that even the great philosopher Confucius will be confused if he is still alive eh?
• You don’t need a fitness personal trainer because you pay your income taxes. So without someone to guide and train you scientifically, you will not lose much body and visceral fat, so you will still have that high blood pressure, that potential stroke and heart attack, so that you will eventually land in a government subsidized hospital and so that some of the taxes which you have paid will be utilized by yourself. That is great clever thinking eh? You are glad that even without a PHD in business studies, you can figure out how to get a wonderful return of investments from your taxes paid
• You don’t need a fitness personal trainer because you believe in conforming to the society. After all, most people in your country are overweight and not exactly glowing with good health, then why should you be otherwise? You are delighted to be like most people, obese and unhealthy. Hey, you are a good citizen aren’t you?
• You don’t need a fitness personal trainer because you can spy on people who hired personal trainers in your gym. You eavesdrop on their trainers giving instructions and then you secretly work out according to what you have overheard not realizing that each and everyone is different and workout plans are to be tailored to each individual condition factoring in other issues like lifestyle, dietary habits and even the choice of exercises. You prefer to “monkey see, monkey do” and eventually falling painfully off the tree. Or should I say falling off the Empire State Building where the mighty King Kong fell?

Intensify Your Workout, Without Becoming Attila the Hun!
In all my years in and out of gyms and fitness centers, there is ONE THING, THE ONE THING that will skyrocket the results from your workouts.
And guess what, this one thing will actually get you out of the gym almost as fast as you got in. Now unless you don’t have a real life (or you are a personal trainer) your idea of fun isn’t hanging out in a gym all day. So getting out of the gym fast is very valuable.
The ‘one thing’ is summed up in one word. . .intensity. That’s it! Now you may be asking, ‘that’s it?’ Yep, that’s it. Intensity is the key to getting more from your workout than anything else.
But you know what; sometimes it is the toughest thing to build into your workouts. You start your workout, and its going really well. Then your friend, Susan, from Sunday school comes in, sees you and then 20 minutes later you two have planned the menu for next Sunday’s church potluck (as if potlucks need menu planning). And your workout is toast.
So how do you ‘intensify’ your workout without becoming Attila the Hun? Easy, read on. . .
1) Set a time limit. When I work with my personal clients their workout time limit is 30 minutes. Yep, 30 minutes. . .that’s it. While in and of itself the 30 minute time limit does nothing, combined with the proper workout it is incredible. By creating a deadline, even artificially, the sense of urgency is increased.
2) Focus on why you’re there, not on whom else is there. Yes, your fitness center is a social environment. Yes, many of your friends are there at the same time as you. In fact, you will make new friends just because of people you meet at your fitness center. But don’t make socializing your focus. And most people don’t realize its happening. Visit with your friends before or after your workout. If someone comes to visit while you are in your routine, DO NOT STOP. Keep working out while they talk. No, it’s not rude, it’s practical. If your conversation requires some serious interaction on your part, simply ask your friend if you can call them at another time. Usually she will say yes.
3) Turn your cell phone off. Just like the movies, cell phones and workouts do not go together. If you know there is a call coming you must take during your workout, postpone your workout. Its good gym etiquette and your workout won’t be short circuited.
4) Combine exercises with complimentary ones using what is called a ’super set’. Basically, it is working one body part for one set and then another body part immediately (no rest) after the first. For example, combine one set of dumbbell chest flyes with close grip pulldowns. In the first you work your chest, then next your work your back. By doing this you work a complimentary body part while resting the other. Result - intensity UP - workout GOOD!
5) Combine resistance exercises with aerobic activities. This is similar to number 4 above. For example, sometimes I have my clients do a shoulder exercise then in between sets go and do 20 calf raises. Another variation (I got this idea from the owner of my ‘home gym’, Chris Kinzler. He says he got it from his ‘noggin’. hmmm.) is to do ’step ups’ between resistance exercises. The ’step up’ is just that. Take a step up box and set it close to your exercise equipment. Then do alternating step ups for 30 - 60 seconds then go back to your primary exercise. Result - intensity UP - workout GOOD!
As a result of increasing intensity, you get, and keep, your heart rate up. You finish your workout in a very reasonable time. You get on with your life. But more importantly you get the results your want.

life. Advanced age is not a static, irreversible biological

changed for the better no matter how many years they’ve
lived or how long they’ve neglected their bodies.
Perhaps you’ve been experiencing some of the signs of
aging. After maturation (about age 30), we lose one-half
pound of muscle each year.. If you are 60, this means you
have 15 pounds less muscle than you did 30 years
earlier–unless you have been doing exercises that help
retain or build muscle.
Do you feel older than you’d like to feel? Are you worn out at
the end of a busy day? Do you notice fat where you used to
have muscle? Are your favorite sports more difficult than
they used to be? Do you look at your older relatives and
think that you don’t want to ever look like that? Do you wish
you have the energy to exercise?
Strength exercise can help solve these problems. You can
have more energy, you can replace the fat now stored on
your body with muscles, no matter how old you are. You can

Let me share with you some of the benefits of resistance
training. The first reason is that it helps keep you from
agingyour body can be as much as 15 to 20 years
younger than your actual age. If you’re 60, wouldn’t you like
the body you live in to appear and function as if were 45
again? It’s truly possible.
Miriam E. Nelson’s book, Strong Women Stay Young
describes a study done at Tuft University in Boston in which
20 women 35 and older lifted weights in a structured
program for one year. At the end of that time their bodies
were fifteen to twenty years more youthful than members of
the control group who had not changed their lifestyles.
Instead of losing bone density, they showed significant
gains. They also traded fat for muscles so they looked
trimmer, even though they had not lost weight. Some
dropped a dress size or two.
And of course, women don’t have a monopoly on strength
training; men get similar results. A man I know who has
been in a senior strength exercise class says that now he
can easily lift a 50 pound bag of shelled corn from his car
and carry it to the storage area where he keeps food for the
wild ducks he feeds. Before beginning strength training, he
had to have someone help him.
A women class member states that now she doesn’t have
to have help with the 25 pound bags of kitty litter to lift them
out of her car trunk.
The second reason is that you will feel better. I cannot tell
you how many times I hear that each week as I work with
older adults. “I just feel so much better.” In addition, weight
lifting helps lower blood pressure and cholesterol,
decreases depression, improves sleep patterns, and helps
manage blood sugar in addition to offering a myriad of other
health benefits. It also assists in guarding against
osteoporosis by increasing bone strength.
The third reason to lift weights is to have more energy.
If you take my advice and begin pumping iron, the first
couple of workouts will leave you feeling very tiredpooped,
in fact! But gradually you’ll find that you’re energized by your
workouts and will feel much better afterward.
The fourth reason is that you will look better. Your body will
replace fat with muscle and muscle is less bulky than fat.
Many women in my classes tell me that after a few workout
sessions, they can now wear clothes that had been too
tightwithout losing any weight. Men also say that they’ve
had to tighten their belts a notch or two.
The fifth reason is to boost your self-esteem. Recently I
worked out with a 27-year-old friend. I set the weights on the
leg extension machine so I could barely do eight repetitions.
When it was her turn, she slid onto the seat, hooked her
legs under the pads, and attempted to lift them. She couldn’t
manage it, turned to me and said, “Phyllis, how did you do
that?” as she decreased the amount of weight on the
stack.
I teach strength trainng classes for seniors each week.
When I finally convince new class members to leave their
three-pound weights behind and move up to fivesand they
do an exercise that would have been impossible just a
couple of weeks beforethey feel so much better about
themselves. The next time they pick up a three-pound
weight, they say, “How did I ever think this was heavy?”
The last reason is that your friends and family will think
you’re cool. One of the ladies in my class for women over 40
told the rest of us that her son who’s been a weightlifter
since college, said “Wow, Mom, look at the muscles in your
arms.” For the first time in her life, you could see muscle
definition in her forearms. For me this means that I can
remain vital and strong even though I am well past 60.
