Oh yes, and talking to passengers in reality scores the number 1 position. So hold your direction on the traffic. The 2nd rule is to stay on the road and hold small pauses in which you can loosen up, especially on extended travels and commemorate to have your bropas when passing the larger Scandinavian spans. How Self-Publishing Science Fiction Is a Waste of Time
Tuesday February 09th 2010, 12:22 am
Filed under: Literature, Marketing + More, School of Publishing

Every day people who hope to see their science fiction stories published have their hopes dashed. Another rejection letter arrives in the mail starting out with, “Dear so-and-so, thank you for your recent submission. However ….” It is frustrating to spend so much time working on a manuscript, submit it multiple times, and then have it rejected. You’re sure it’s a well-written book but you just cannot seem to find a publisher. So inevitably many people ask, “Should I self-publish my book?”

For science fiction novels the answer is a resounding NO according to popular science fiction author and expert in the field Robert J. Sawyer. In fact, Sawyer is so vehement in his position that when people seek to ply him with “ifs”, “ands”, “buts”, and “ors” he simply tells them to have nothing to do with self-publication. And for good reason, says science fiction columnist Michael Martinez.

Science fiction is a niche genre that is intensely competitive. Editors can only publish so many books per year, Martinez points out. When they fill out that quota they have to turn all other books away, even if they are good books. But sometimes would-be authors don’t want to accept that maybe they just don’t write well enough to make the cut in New York City, Boston, and London. Such people will take their manuscripts to so-called Vanity presses, Subsidy presses, and even online print-on-demand providers.

The print-on-demand industry has flourished thanks to the Internet. You can offer a book through resellers like Amazon, Barnes and Noble, even Wal-Mart. But, Martinez points out, if no one knows who you are and if people don’t know your work they won’t be looking for it. The advantage that commercial publishers have over self-publishers is all in the marketing resources. Commercial publishers may be selective about whom they publish but they have the means to create demand and visibility for their authors’ books. Self-publishers have to build that demand and visibility from the ground up.

How many people do you need to show your book to to make a lot of sales? A LOT, says Martinez. If you can put your book in front of 1,000,000 people a year through resources like the Internet Book List you might sell about 1,000 copies. Most people won’t ever create that kind of visibility. It may seem unfair, but for a highly competitive field like science fiction you’re better off following the traditional route of making a name for yourself by selling short stories, Martinez suggests. That way you’ll build up a “science fiction works resume” that gives you some credibility, and that may help you publish your novel.

Getting Noticed at a Job Event

Standing out at a Job Faire can make a difference in your job hunt. Career Fairs are starting to pick up, and Dice is running some nice ones, called Targeted Job Fairs. At a SF Bay Area Job Faire in January, 10 companies as showing up, and a major job search company has 82 career fairs scheduled for 2010 across the States.

How do you stand out at a Career Fair? The rivalry can be noteworthy, but you can help yourself stand out from the bunch with early preparation. At AA-Careers, we have a straight-forward step-by-step process to prepare. Planning to go? Here’s how to prepare:

First, investigate the companies that are going and pick your targets. Use the internet to check out the companies that are there before you even decide to go. Go to their web sites and see if they have their job openings listed. Pick a small number to target, and get ready to spend an hour researching each one. It’s hard to do more than nine in a day, and three or four is a much more reasonable target. For each company, you want to know: key product lines, recent news, and executive names. Try to see if you know anyone at the target companies. You will end up with with a page or two of research for each company/job.

Second, if there are job postings on the web, read them to see what the company is looking for. Create a mapping of your accomplishments and skills to the demands of the job. Make the language match. If the hiring organization calls customers "clients", your resume should do the same thing. The achievements should be written in the style of the hiring organization.

Third, create a ‘brief sales pitch’ for each potential company/job combination. Write down a sixty second ‘thumbnail’ that you can repeat verbally depicting why you are a key candidate for that position. You’ll use this in your resume and when you meet the company at the job stall.

Fourth, modify your resume for each opportunity. The objective on your resume should exactly match the job you’re targeting. The executive summary should be a written form of your “mini sales pitch” for the job. Then choose the achievements and skills that most clearly match the job prerequisites. Especially at a Career Fair, the purpose of your resume is a sales tool for you – to get you on-site job interviews. It should be very easy to see that you’re a match based on your resume.

Fifth, practice your ‘mini-sales-pitch’. Collect your research and the resume for each spot - bring a couple of copies for each – and put each in a distinctly labeled folder. Keep them in a lightweight briefcase or folio.

Finally, dress and prepare as if you’re doing on-site interviews. Dress well and be properly groomed. Avoid strong cologne or perfume…use any cologne or perfume meagerly, if at all.

Remember to smile, and good hunting!

What You Know before Purchasing Teak Platform Bed Sheets
Thursday July 23rd 2009, 1:31 pm
Filed under: Law, Literature, Shopping Portal

Till some years back asian platform bed sheets used to be made from white cotton cloth. You are startled at the range of unusual bedding that are on offer nowadays. Bedding was never so beautiful with the vibrant colors, prints and textures that are offered in bed sheets nowadays

That is why there are some things that need to be taken care of before you drop any money on buying bedding.

Evaluate the sizing of your bed

It is a common myth that one queen bed or king bed has the same proportions which is so untrue. Usually the top measurements dont differ a lot but the other dimensions vary with each bed maker. Due to this variant in the dimensions, it is safe to measure all the dimensions and the depth of your mattress too. Often similar beds from the same brand are longer or wider than each other. When you have your beds dimensions with you, choosing a bedsheet is easier.

Zero down on the Bed shop

Super storehouses usually stock on branded bedding and their own brands in one place.. For a unusual look, some people also go for embroidered bed sheets with sequins. If you still cannot find what you want, try the online stores. For those who still love their cotton fiber sheets, a discount rate store is where you should go.

Learn about the thread count of bedding

A thread count refers to the number of threads contained in one square inch of the bed sheet in both directions of the weave. This count is mentioned on the label of the bed sheet itself. A luxurious texture calls for a higher thread count. Beware of a very high thread count as the sheet may have slimmer threads and not the texture you want. For the right soft feel, a thread count of 175 - 300 is fine.

Pick your bedsheet material

A material that is sensibly priced and feels nice to sleep on is the one for you. Though cotton is the most chosen material, some people go for the cotton blends as they do not crease. For a warm cocoon around you, flannel is best in wintertime. For a luxurious look, go for satin, silk or microfiber.

Calculate the size of the bed sheet

The size of the bed sheet you select has to be checked at this point. With the bed sizing ready with you, check if the bedsheet you plan to buy will fit your bed. Recall that all bedding shrink by 7% when they are first washed. If you have really liked the bedding you plan to buy, always invest in some additional sets. these extra sets come in handy if you have kids at home.

Hope these six steps lead you to finding a perfect bedsheet for your bed.

Take the beds measurings

It is a common myth that one queen bed or king bed has the same proportions which is so untrue. Usually the top measurings dont differ a lot but the other dimensions vary with each bed maker. Your bed could be shorter or taller than another one from the same manufacturer. Measuring your bed will give you an idea of the sizing of your bedsheet before buying.

Zero down on the Bed shop

Large departmental storehouses have a separate division for linen and bedding and offer branded sheets and in-house brands under the same roof. For a unique look, some people also go for embroidered bedding with sequins. If you still cannot find what you want, try the online shops. Learn about the thread count of bedding

A thread count signifies the count of threads consisted in one square inch of a sheet in both weaving directions. This count is mentioned on the label of the bed sheet itself. More the thread count, more is the richness of the fabric. Beware of a very high thread count as the sheet may have lighter threads and not the texture you want. For the right soft feel, a thread count of 175 to around 300 is fine.

Choose the bedsheet fabric.

A material that is sensibly priced and feels nice to sleep on is the one for you. Cotton sheets are still liked, but blended cotton is preferable by those who dont like wrinkles. For a warm cocoon around you, flannel is best in winter. For a luxurious look, go for satin, silk or microfiber.

Caring directions

Ensure that you are aware of the cleaning instructions for the bed sheet beforehand. Silk sheets cannot be machine washed as they are delicate. Are you ready to do that? The best way is to purchase comfortable sheets that can be machine washed.

These little tips will surely help you in choosing the right bedsheet for you and make every night a night to recall!

Empowering Teenagers - A Few Clues About Teens And A New Book
Sunday May 18th 2008, 10:27 pm

EMPOWERING TEENAGERS

From a new book: “Adolescence is a difficult period, both for the emerging adult and for those around him/her. Intellectual growth, sexual awareness, quantum physical growth and the need for increasing independence are all natural and expected patterns. We need, badly, to recognize these patterns and to empower the “young adult” to deal with growth in wholesome and productive ways. That is not a utopia… it is achievable with understanding and open communication.

I’ll give you a major clue: always understand that what peers think of your child and his/her actions is an overly important consideration for the child. Maybe such peer opinions are unjustified, but they are excruciatingly important to the child. We have not done the best job possible at empowering our children….giving them the room and respect that they deserve and expecting the same in return. “

A new book, “Empowering Children” is a powerful tool for parents and others interested in raising children to the crowning height of their individual potential. The jeopardy of children in today’s world is revealed at length, with camera angles on internet dangers, child abuse, sexual predators, domestic violence and ecology issues. Parent and family roles are discussed. There is a chapter on the author’s hundreds of motivational talks in the classroom. Then a global journey, examining the empowerment needs of children in the most desperate conditions as well as those in better circumstance.

Some comments from the children:

“I wish everyone was as inspiring and open minded as you.”

“I thought my life was cruddy… thanks for coming to our class, now I know I can do something great with my life.”

“I really appreciate you coming to talk. I think it’s really cool how you try to help teens.”

“Changed the way I thought about things and helped me to open my eyes.”
